In what universe is it radical to try and save the workers (including the workers at dealerships) from the staggering, decades-long incompetence of Chrysler management... which grew out of, and continues to grow out of, the staggering demands of workers and government on their economic viability?

Soon, our youngest citizens, raised to value life by the yardstick of utility, will face restricted lifestyles due to a massively indebted government. Old folks without Posner's wealth may then begim understanding the perils of following intellectuals who blithely dismiss opposition to abortion as mere religious fanaticism.

I'm passing through Mississippi and so dropped in on the Tea Party in the capitol of Jackson. It was the most satisfying such event I've ever attended, and I have attended many. The kook quotient, always present at leftwing and rightwing rallies, was nill.
As you noted Rick, the unity of message was strong; I saw only two anti-abortion guys. No Confederate flags. The remaining signage addressed the dangers for a nation and a people who blithely enter into massive, unheard of debt. Two of the speakers were African-Americans who touted personal responsibility and said future debt would be a new form of slavery (my favorite sign -- "Obamanomics -- Chains You Can Believe In."
If the economy is not moving by this time next year, I predict the Tea Party movement will be a major political force in the 2010 elections.

Success is where planning meets opportunity. The important thing for now is for conservatives to adopt a core platform and beat that drum loudly and consistently. The full bill for the Democrats' policies will likely come due in 5 years or so, when inflation, entitlements, and expensive energy begin crushing American dreams.

How radical is Obama? That we ask this at all is funny, given the influences, attitudes, and politics that have been on display his entire life. We have become enamored of the idea that men and women are always complex, that they will surprise us with nuance of character and thought, if only we watch and listen close enough. The narrative must always balance good against bad. Villains must have their soft side. Heroes must be flawed.
If only we watched what Obama does and ignored what he says, we'd realize exactly who he is. He not only intends to remake America, but the American character. IIRC, Mao estimated reshaping a people's character would take around 12 generations. But things move faster these days.

Holy Moly. I've finally caught up on the news and I'm stunned at the number of prominent Obama supporters in doubt. In addition to Warren Buffet, Jim Cramer, Jack Welch and Chris Matthews, now Thomas Friedman, David Gergen, Maureen Dowd, and David Brooks are wringing hands over how much worse Boy Wonder's policies have made the economy.
Where are the people who will assure us those policies, created by a White House and Congress totally owned by Democrats, are the path to an economic turnaround?

Only 51 days in and Obama's supporters won't defend his policies. Not Warren Buffet, or Jack Welch, or Jim Cramer, or Chris Matthews. Only 51 days in and they're already blaming Bush for what is shaping up as a historic failure. No fan dancer ever covered her ass faster.
